Ariose Choir: Assistant Choral Conductor 2024/2025

Ariose Choir is seeking an Assistant Choral Conductor for its 2024/2025 season. Entering its 30th season of choral excellence, Ariose is an Edmonton-based, treble voiced choir under the direction of Jolaine Kerley. The Assistant Choral Director will work with the Artistic Director in warm up, sectional and conducting duties and will also participate as a regular singing member of the choir when not active in the Assistant Conductor role.

Position Summary

The Assistant Choral Director will work in tandem with the Artistic Director, Jolaine Kerley. In addition to conducting designated pieces, they will help out with sectionals, coaching and warm ups. Ideally, the Assistant Choral Director will be familiar with the entirety of the repertoire for each concert, with the ability to step in as needed in case of absence, illness or scheduling conflicts for the director. When not performing designated duties, they will sing as a member of the choir. 

Location and Rehearsal Schedule

Ariose rehearses at Holy Trinity Anglican Church located at 10037 - 84 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, T6E2G6. 

Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 9:30 PM. The concert season runs from September to May with two primary performances in winter and spring and smaller concerts throughout the season. A detailed schedule for the season will be provided in advance to the successful candidate.

Duties

  • Run weekly or bi-weekly warm-ups. Ability to do this in front of the choir or at the piano

  • Run sectionals

  • Conduct 1-2 pieces during the fall and winter terms. 

  • Conduct these assigned pieces at select concerts

  • Sing with the choir when not conducting (treble voice required) 

  • Conduct rehearsals when needed 

  • Attend all rehearsals, concerts and workshops.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as a chorister

  • Graduate degree  in choral conducting completed or in progress, or equivalent choral conducting  experience 

  • Piano background - can lead portions of  rehearsal from the podium or the piano if needed

  • As Ariose is a treble voiced choir, the successful candidate will be a treble voiced singer

  • 1 year position with the possibility of a 1 year extension 

  • Compensation: $2000 plus the $500 chorister tuition fee waived ($1000/term)
